ESIM IN MEXICO

If you changed phones and want to keep your number, check what options you have for a prepaid eSIM in Mexico and when number portability can help you.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING

01

A prepaid eSIM cannot be transferred directly

02

Do not delete your eSIM before reviewing your options

03

You can keep your number through number portability

04

Number portability requires switching carriers

In Mexico, direct transfer of a prepaid eSIM between devices is not available.

01

What is transferring an eSIM?

Transfer and number portability are different processes.

An eSIM transfer consists of moving a line from one device to another while keeping the same carrier and number.

Example

You have an AT&T eSIM on your current phone and you want to move that same AT&T line to a new phone.

In Mexico, this feature is not available for prepaid lines. Direct transfer options are limited for certain subscription plans.

02

What happens with a prepaid eSIM?

The eSIM profile does not work like a physical SIM.

If you have a Mexican prepaid eSIM, you cannot directly move the installed profile to another device using the transfer feature.

Do not delete your eSIM before reviewing your options

The QR code may be for one-time use only. Deleting the profile does not mean you will be able to scan the same QR code again on another device.

Direct transfer

Not available for prepaid eSIM lines in Mexico.

Number portability

You can switch carriers, keep your number and receive a new eSIM.

03

The alternative: number portability

Keep your number and switch carriers.

If you need to use your number on another device, one alternative is to port your number to another carrier.

Instead of transferring the same profile, your number switches to another company and you receive a new eSIM.

1

Your current number

You keep the number you already use.

2

You switch carriers

You request number portability to another company.

3

You receive a new eSIM

You install the new profile on your device.

You must switch carriers

Number portability means switching companies. You cannot port a number to the same carrier.

AT&T → Movistar
This is number portability because you are switching carriers.

×

AT&T → AT&T
This is not number portability because you would remain with the same carrier.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about transfer and portability.

Can I transfer a prepaid eSIM to another phone?
Not through the eSIM transfer feature. In Mexico, direct transfer is not available for prepaid lines. If you want to keep your number, you can review a portability option.
Can I use the same QR code on my new phone?
No. An eSIM QR code may be single-use and should not be considered reusable on another device.
What is the difference between transfer and portability?
Transfer moves the same line between devices while keeping the same operator. Portability keeps your number, but moves it to a different company.
Can I port from AT&T to AT&T?
No. To port your number, you must change operators. For example, you can port from AT&T to Movistar.
Can I port from Bait to Bait?
No. You would have to choose a different company.
Will I lose my number with portability?
No. Portability lets you change operators while keeping your phone number.
Does Telefonía_MX offer eSIM portability?
Yes. We offer options such as AT&T and Movistar, Axios, Bait, and Supr. You must choose a different operator that you currently use.
Can I delete my previous eSIM before switching?
It is better not to delete it before completing the process. If you have questions, contact support before deleting the profile.
Does portability work if my current line uses a physical SIM?
It may be possible. Portability is related with your number and operator, not only with the SIM format.
Are portability and linking the same thing?
No. Portability keeps your number when you change operators. Linking associates a Mexican mobile line with the identity of its owner.
