How to keep WhatsApp and your Mexican number while traveling in Europe
If you're wondering how to use WhatsApp in Europe with your number, the answer is that you can keep your Mexican account and connect it to the internet through another line or a Wi-Fi network. Learn to tell apart the account, the line and SMS so you can travel without surprises.
Your WhatsApp number and your connection can be different
Traveling doesn't require changing the number registered on WhatsApp. What you do need to distinguish is keeping your app account, keeping your Mexican line active and receiving calls or SMS on it: these are three different things.
WhatsApp identifies your account by the number you verified. The internet connection can come from another SIM, an eSIM or Wi-Fi. For example, if you arrive in Madrid and use an eSIM for Spain for internet, your chats continue on your usual account.
Important: don't use the “Change number” feature just because you added a temporary SIM. That feature is for an actual change of the account's number.
Keeping WhatsApp doesn't keep your Mexican line active
Even if the app keeps working, your number depends on your carrier's conditions. Keep the line active according to its plan, top-ups or payments.
If you will be away for a long stay, plan how to maintain the line and check that you can access your carrier account. Also note its official support channel: the messaging app and the phone service have different recovery procedures.
Prepare access to your account before your flight
- Update WhatsApp and confirm that the registered number is the one you want to keep.
- Check your two-step verification PIN and the associated email, if you use one.
- Check your backup: an active session is not the same as a recent backup.
- Store your credentials with a secure method you can recover.
Do these checks without uninstalling the app as a test. Changing several things at once makes it harder to identify what caused an interruption.
Choose the line that will provide internet
On a phone that supports two lines, give clear names to the Mexican line and the travel line and select the one that should use mobile data. Review automatic data switching to prevent the Mexican line from browsing while roaming.
Follow the roaming instructions for the travel line: some regional eSIMs, such as Eurolink, need that option turned on to use partner networks (check the same if you choose a data-only one like EuroWave), while you keep the restrictions you set for the Mexican line. For more detail, see our guide to roaming in Europe from Mexico.
Check that WhatsApp works when you arrive
Once connected, open a lightweight web page and then send a message to someone you trust. That way you separate a possible lack of internet from a problem with the app.
If the internet works but a message doesn't arrive, the recipient may also be offline. For WhatsApp calls, look for a stable connection: quality can vary with the network and congestion.
What happens with bank SMS
An SMS sent to your Mexican number doesn't arrive in WhatsApp, nor does it become an internet message because you're using another line. The receiving line needs to be able to get it through a compatible service.
Before your trip, check the conditions and verification options with your carrier and your bank. If a process requires a code sent to your Mexican line, set up that reception separately from your travel data. If you also want a local number to call or receive SMS from businesses in Europe, a Spanish line such as the Orange eSIM or the Llamaya eSIM can coexist with your Mexican line without touching your WhatsApp account.
If WhatsApp asks you to verify again
A new installation or a device change may require verifying the account. WhatsApp warns that travelers may have trouble receiving codes due to roaming or connectivity issues; some alternative methods depend on what you set up beforehand.
Follow the official procedure shown on screen and don't request codes repeatedly. Avoid third-party services that promise to receive the code for you.
Security: never share your registration code or PIN with someone who contacts you unexpectedly. If you need help, go to the official support center yourself.
If you lose your phone, change countries or return to Mexico
If you lose your phone
Protect the device and the line through official channels, use the location or lock tools and then recover WhatsApp following the official procedure. Restoring the app, recovering the number and recovering your chat history may require different steps.
When changing countries within Europe
You don't need to change your WhatsApp number when going from Spain to France or Italy. Check whether your internet service includes the new destination (a regional eSIM such as EuroVia, EuroWave if your route goes through the United Kingdom or Switzerland, or another from the eSIM for Europe collection saves you from switching lines at every border); if there are interruptions, check the network first and don't register a temporary number.
When you return to Mexico
Check which line is selected for data and calls and confirm that your usual line works. WhatsApp can continue with the same number you left with.
Frequently asked questions about WhatsApp in Europe
Can I use WhatsApp with my Mexican number on a European eSIM?
Yes. An account that is already set up can keep working with internet from another line or Wi-Fi without changing the registered number.
Will I receive my bank's SMS if I use a data eSIM?
Not through the data eSIM. SMS sent to your Mexican number must reach that line; check with your carrier and your bank before traveling.
Do I have to use “Change number” on WhatsApp when traveling?
No. That feature is for an actual change of the account's number, not for adding a temporary data line.
