Data-only eSIM vs eSIM with a number: differences, uses and limitations

Choosing between a data-only eSIM or one with a number depends on how you need to communicate. Learn what each option includes, what happens with WhatsApp and verification SMS, and what to check in the service description.

What a data-only eSIM is

The word eSIM describes the digital format of the service's identity, not its features. An eSIM can correspond to a full line or to a product limited to data.

A data-only eSIM provides internet connectivity: email, browsing, online maps and messaging. If you make a call from an app, the audio travels over the internet and uses data. This is the case with travel eSIMs such as Chido for Mexico or Eurolink and EuroWave for Europe.

That doesn't mean you have conventional calls or SMS. The system showing an identifier or a number field in settings doesn't prove that there is a public number enabled for calls.

What an eSIM with a number means

An eSIM with a number can provide a usable phone identity, but you should check which functions are active. Ask separately about incoming calls, outgoing calls, and sending and receiving SMS.

Check which country the number belongs to: having a number doesn't mean having a local number in your destination. For example, EuroRoam works in 36 European countries with a French number, the Orange eSIM and the Llamaya eSIM assign a Spanish number with data and calls, while the AT&T eSIM assigns a Mexican number with calls and SMS. The service may also limit call destinations, minutes or validity.

The differences in everyday tasks

Data only

Maps, email, bookings, social media and calls or messages within apps like WhatsApp.

With a number

In addition to data (if included), conventional calls and SMS depending on the line's active functions.

The distinction shows up when the task depends on the conventional phone network: receiving an SMS code, calling a front desk or letting someone dial your line directly.

Describe the task before comparing. “I need to talk to the hotel” can be solved by chat or email; “the hotel only confirms arrivals by phone call” is a much more specific need.

WhatsApp, verification codes and temporary numbers

A WhatsApp account that is already set up can use internet from a data eSIM without changing the registered number. However, if the app asks for verification again, the data eSIM doesn't guarantee you'll receive the SMS sent to your usual number.

For a code sent to your usual number, the key is to keep access to that line. An eSIM with a different number doesn't automatically solve the problem, and a new number isn't guaranteed to be accepted on every platform either.

Important: avoid linking important accounts to a temporary line without planning for its continuity. You could complicate future verifications when the trip ends.

Having two lines with different functions

A compatible phone can use one line for data and keep another for voice or messages. The available combination depends on the model, its regional version and how many active profiles it supports. Check the compatible devices before deciding.

Set clear labels, check the default line for each function and see whether the system can automatically switch the data line.

Coverage and speed don't depend on having a number

A data-only eSIM doesn't necessarily have less coverage than one with voice. Infrastructure, service agreements, device compatibility and location determine access. Including calls doesn't guarantee higher speed either.

Sharing internet

Both options may allow internet sharing, but the feature must be enabled on the service. A laptop can sync and update in the background: keep those tasks under control and check your usage.

Wi-Fi calling

Carrier Wi-Fi calling is not the same as calling from a messaging app: it requires compatibility and activation. Check its availability abroad with your provider.

Three examples to identify what you need

  • Tourism with WhatsApp and email bookings: data can cover much of your communication; prepare verifications for your usual number separately.
  • Coordinating with businesses that call by phone: conventional voice may be needed; check the number, incoming calls and allowed destinations.
  • Working on a laptop with few calls: prioritize data, hotspot and stability, and check dual SIM compatibility.

What to check in the service description

Look for explicit answers about data, number, voice and SMS. Then confirm the number's country, validity, supported networks, ability to share internet and reactivation conditions. Don't read phrases like “full connectivity” as a list of features. Once you've chosen, follow the guide to install and activate your eSIM before you leave.

Frequently asked questions about data-only eSIMs and eSIMs with a number

Can I make calls with a data-only eSIM?

Yes, through apps that use the internet, such as WhatsApp. What you won't have are conventional calls or SMS with your own number.

Does an eSIM with a number have better coverage?

Not necessarily. Coverage depends on the network, the service agreements, the device and the location, not on having a number.

Will I receive SMS from my bank with a data eSIM?

Not on that eSIM. SMS sent to your usual number arrive at the line associated with that number, so you need to keep it available.
