Google Maps without internet: how to download maps before traveling to Mexico
Knowing how to use Google Maps without internet lets you prepare an important part of your travel before you arrive in Mexico. Learn how to download the right areas, which features you keep offline and how to test it before your trip.
How to download an area on Android or iPhone
The app can save an area on your phone and use it when you have no connection. Think of the download as a local copy of an area, not as an internet connection inside the app.
- Open Google Maps while connected and go to your profile.
- Look for the “Offline maps” option.
- Choose “Select your own map” and adjust the area.
- Confirm the download and check that the area appears in the list of available maps.
The names or position of the controls may vary depending on the version. For a trip to Mexico City, for example, don't limit the box to your accommodation if you will arrive at a terminal outside that area: include the origin, the destination and a margin for nearby trips.
Tip: use recognizable names for each download, such as “Arrival and hotel” or “Mérida and surroundings”. They will help you find the right map when you are short on time.
What the downloaded map can do
Google lets you use the saved area for driving navigation when the whole route falls within it. Offline you won't have traffic information or alternative routes, and walking, cycling and public transit directions are not available. Some regions may have download restrictions.
Available offline
Viewing the saved area, searching for addresses within it and driving navigation if the whole route is included.
Not available offline
Live traffic, alternative routes and walking, cycling or public transit directions.
If your plan is to walk around a historic center, you can carry a visual reference of the area, but write down the streets and landmarks you will need. Also, don't take the saved information as confirmation that a business is open or a road is still passable. For live traffic and walking or public transit routes you will need data: a data-only eSIM such as Chido or MayaLink can cover them while the downloaded map serves as a backup.
How to choose the right area for your trip
Start with the points you can't improvise: arrival terminal, accommodation and next departure. Then add your confirmed activities. That way you avoid downloading a very detailed tourist area and forgetting the transfer your stay actually starts with.
If you will drive between cities, check the entire route. Downloading both destinations doesn't necessarily cover the highway connecting them. For a trip with several domestic flights, organize downloads by leg and check them together with your bookings.
The blue dot and your phone's location
The blue dot represents the device's estimated location. A wide circle around it indicates greater uncertainty; a small one, a more precise estimate.
Receiving positioning signals and downloading map data are different functions. That is why a phone can show its position on a saved area without an active mobile connection. Even so, buildings and indoor spaces can make positioning harder.
If the dot seems off, compare what you see with signs and physical landmarks. Give the device time in a safe place and check that location permission is enabled.
A test before leaving home
With the map downloaded, temporarily turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data and open the area. Search for an important address and, if you are going to drive, try a route within the saved area. Do the test while not driving and return to your normal settings when you finish.
The goal is to discover what still depends on the internet; run the same test with the other apps for traveling to Mexico you will bring. If a booking, a list or a photo of the entrance doesn't open, save it separately. Also carry a note with the hotel name, the street and an additional reference.
Updates and available storage
Downloaded maps need to be updated before they expire. Check their status in “Offline maps” before your trip and complete updates while connected.
Also check your device's storage, since photos and videos take up a good part of it. If you switch phones, check the maps again on the device you will bring: a shared account doesn't guarantee that local downloads are on every device.
Common problems and how to identify them
- You can't find the download: check the list of maps and the device where you downloaded it.
- The route doesn't appear: check that the entire trip falls within the prepared areas.
- A walking or public transit route is missing: this is a limitation of offline mode, not a faulty download.
- The app can't locate you: distinguish this problem from a missing map; moving to an open, safe space can help.
If you need up-to-date information about a closure or route change, find a connection, such as your accommodation's Wi-Fi or the data on your eSIM for Mexico, or check a local source. The saved map doesn't know what happened after the download.
