What happens to your eSIM when you change phones? Transfer, deletion and reactivation

Transferring an eSIM to another phone can be simple when the carrier and the devices support a compatible procedure, but not all eSIMs move the same way. Learn about the options, the risks of deleting the profile and how to check that the migration is complete.

What gets transferred when you change phones

Some lines allow transfer from settings; others need a new activation from the provider. With certain temporary services, the profile may be limited to the device where it was installed.

An eSIM is not an ordinary file you can copy to a folder. Its activation depends on compatible mechanisms between the device and the provider, defined by the GSMA's remote provisioning architecture.

When you change phones you can move data, apps and settings, but that doesn't guarantee the line will be activated. You can keep a number even if the provider issues a new profile for the other phone.

Recommendation: keep access to the old device and the line until you've confirmed the service works on the new device, unless official instructions say otherwise.

Automatic transfer and new activation

Automatic transfer is available for certain combinations of carriers and devices. It may ask for authorization on the old phone and complete activation on the new one, but seeing the option doesn't guarantee your line is eligible.

When there is no compatible transfer, the provider may issue a new eSIM or provide another activation method, which may require verifying your identity. Ask what information you need before deactivating the old service and, when you receive the new profile, follow the steps to install and activate your eSIM.

iPhone to iPhone

Apple offers Quick Transfer, carrier activation and activation codes depending on the service. Keep both devices charged, follow the system flow and check browsing, calls and SMS on the new phone.

Android

There is no universal sequence. Some setup assistants include eSIM transfer if the carrier supports it; Google documents features for Pixel. Check the manufacturer's guide and any carrier lock.

Travel eSIMs may have different rules

A regular line and a temporary travel eSIM may handle migration differently: some products allow reinstallation or transfer and others remain tied to the original device.

Ask whether you can move it, whether you'll keep your remaining data and whether the validity period keeps running during the process. If you plan to change phones before traveling, complete the change first, confirm the new model appears among the eSIM-compatible devices and activate the service on the final device.

The QR code is not necessarily reusable

An activation QR code may be limited to one use, one device or specific conditions. Saving it is useful as a private reference, but it doesn't guarantee you can scan it again after deleting the profile.

If the system says the code has already been used, contact the provider: a new activation may need to be issued. The quick fix for your eSIM page can help you identify the problem before writing to support. Also, don't try to keep the same line active on two phones with the same code.

Security: don't share your QR code publicly or with people who shouldn't manage the line.

Deactivating, deleting and canceling are different actions

  • Deactivate: suspends use of the line on that device without necessarily removing the profile.
  • Delete: removes the profile installed on the phone.
  • Cancel: is a commercial step with the provider.

Apple states that deleting the eSIM doesn't cancel the plan by itself and advises against doing it as a troubleshooting step unless the carrier tells you to. Before confirming a deletion or reset, read exactly what action the screen describes.

If you're going to sell your phone or you lost it

If you're going to sell or hand over your old phone

First confirm that the service works on the new device. Then follow the manufacturer's official procedure to remove your information. Don't hand over activation codes, carrier credentials or verification messages with the device.

If the phone was lost or stopped working

Without access to the old device you may not be able to use a transfer that requires approval from it. Contact the carrier for the replacement procedure and use the official lock or location tools. For a travel eSIM, notify the provider before trying to reinstall with the same code.

How to check that the migration is complete

  1. Check the line's name, status and data selection.
  2. Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi and do a quick browsing test.
  3. If the plan includes voice and SMS, check those functions too.
  4. Check the dual SIM settings and the default line for calls.
  5. Review the apps that relied on phone verifications.

Avoid making the change right before boarding a flight or receiving an essential call. If something doesn't match, stop before deleting the old profile and contact support.

Frequently asked questions about transferring an eSIM

Can I scan the same QR code again on another phone?

Not necessarily. Many codes are single-use or tied to one device. Ask the provider if you need a new activation.

Does deleting the eSIM cancel my plan?

No. Deleting the profile and canceling the service are different actions, and deleting may force you to request a new eSIM.

Is the remaining data on a travel eSIM kept when changing phones?

It depends on the product. Ask the provider whether it allows transfer or reinstallation and whether the validity period keeps running.
